Between September 28 and October 4, 2024, the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas, was at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport due to an unscheduled stop at the shipyard. During the cruise from September 21 to 28, the ship, which was commissioned in January 2024, experienced technical difficulties that significantly restricted its maximum speed. As it was not possible to rectify the problem during the cruise, a visit to the shipyard had to be organized at short notice. As a result, the planned Caribbean voyage from September 28 to October 5, 2024 was canceled and the ship was moved from Miami to Freeport.

Grand Bahama Shipyard is known for its extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of cruise ships in this region. During the work, the Icon of the Seas was berthed at a pier, where experts from both the shipping company and the shipyard examined the technical defects. The difficulties with the propulsion system were successfully resolved. On the evening of October 4, the ship finally left Freeport and headed back to Miami. This morning, at around 03:30, the Icon of the Seas docked in the cruise port of Miami, allowing regular guest operations to resume.

Passengers will be welcomed on board today for a new week-long cruise to the Eastern Caribbean.

In the long term, Icon of the Seas will continue to operate out of Miami, offering regular week-long cruises to both the Western and Eastern Caribbean.
