British cruise line Cunard and its parent company, Carnival Corporation, are getting their flagship ready for the coming decades: From March 31 to May 9, 2027, RMS Queen Mary 2 will undergo her Half-Life Refit at Damen Shiprepair in Brest, France. For the world’s only ocean liner still operating in regular transatlantic line service, this 40-day dry dock stay marks the most extensive transformation in her history, surpassing even the 2016 "Remastering" in Hamburg.

To make the most efficient use of the downtime, new steel blocks and cabin modules are being prefabricated on land well in advance using the pre-build ashore method. Financially, the project rests on a solid foundation following Carnival Corporation's record third-quarter 2026 revenue of $8.4 billion.

Commercially, the modernization focuses heavily on data-driven yield management, converting underutilized public spaces into revenue-generating accommodations. A total of 31 new staterooms and suites will be added across the ship, increasing double-occupancy capacity by 62 guests to over 2,700 passengers. A new structural block on Deck 13 will house 16 exclusive Princess Grill Suites, while the former bookshop near the panoramic elevators on Deck 8 will make way for a high-end Penthouse Suite—though the famous library next door will remain completely untouched. In addition, the Concierge Lounge on Deck 9 will be removed and the Kids & Teens Zone on Deck 6 cut in half to create space for 15 new Britannia Inside staterooms, while 18 existing balcony cabins on Deck 11 will be upgraded to the Britannia Club category. Alongside these additions, original QM2 designer Chris Finch and illustrator Tanu Vasu are completely redesigning all existing Grill Suites—including spa-inspired bathrooms and the Grill restaurants—blending classic Hollywood glamour with British Art Deco heritage.

Public spaces and outdoor decks are also seeing noticeable changes: Because the Boardwalk Café on Deck 12 is being removed and the new suites on Deck 13 take up open deck space, the liner is getting an all-new sun deck on Deck 14, where classic deck games like shuffleboard, paddle tennis, and pickleball will continue to be offered. Inside, the largest planetarium at sea ("Illuminations") is receiving a state-of-the-art digital projection upgrade, the shopping arcade on Deck 3 is transitioning into a luxury boutique experience, and the Mareel Wellness & Beauty Spa is being completely reimagined. The legendary onboard kennels are also expanding with additional capacity, a refurbished Owners' Lounge, and a larger outdoor walking area complete with its signature British lamppost and American fire hydrant. While maritime traditionalists criticize the denser layout and altered exterior profile, it is precisely this added revenue that secures the long-term future of the high-maintenance liner.

However, the most critical and costly part of the refit will take place out of sight inside the hull, driven by the full implementation of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for shipping in 2027. To drastically reduce fuel consumption and carbon allowance costs, a major overhaul of the ship's CODAG propulsion system—which combines four Wärtsilä diesel engines and two gas turbines to power four Mermaid pod drives—is expected. Alongside a major overhaul of the diesel engines and a potential upgrade of the gas turbines to more fuel-efficient GE LM2500+G4 models, the exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) will be updated and the hull coated with low-friction silicone paint. The revitalized Queen Mary 2 will return to service on May 9, 2027, depart Southampton on her first post-refit transatlantic crossing to New York on May 12, and set sail from Hamburg to the Norwegian fjords on May 28.
