In January 2026, during an extensive refit in Dubai, the ship received not only fresh designs in the hotel and gastronomy areas but also state-of-the-art environmental technology. As a pioneer for the entire fleet, innovative filters were installed that remove almost all microplastics from the wastewater of the onboard laundry. Prior to this, a shore power system was retrofitted to significantly reduce emissions while docked in ports.
The fact that seafaring is heavily subject to global influences became apparent in the spring of 2026. Due to a geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, Mein Schiff 5 was stuck in Doha for weeks. After the safe evacuation of all passengers by plane, the skeleton crew had to navigate the empty ship back to the Mediterranean on a massive detour around the African continent. Thanks to a logistical masterstroke, the regular European summer season was still able to start almost on schedule.
Despite the new, significantly larger mega-ships of the InTUItion-Class, Mein Schiff 5 remains extremely important for the fleet. Thanks to its medium size, it can continue to call at smaller ports that are inaccessible to the giants. With the proven premium all-inclusive concept, dynamic yield management, and special event cruises, the ship will continue to navigate the oceans with economic success for many years to come.
