Queen Anne and Europa 2 in Hamburg: Double Call with Green Shore Power

Today, the Port of Hamburg is hosting a particularly exciting double call. The massive Queen Anne and the luxurious Europa 2 are docked at the terminals simultaneously. While the British megaship completes its turnaround at the spacious Cruise Center Steinwerder, the Europa 2 is moored at the architecturally stunning terminal in HafenCity. For cruise fans on the Elbe River, today offers a great contrast between classic transatlantic tradition and a casual lifestyle.

However, the truly special feature of this maritime meeting is what is known as "cold ironing." Both ocean liners are connected to Hamburg's modern shore power facilities throughout their entire stay. They are able to completely shut down their marine diesel engines and draw 100 percent green electricity from renewable energy sources. For the city, this means no exhaust fumes, no fine dust, and hardly any noise at the quay.

Hamburg is already leading the way when it comes to decarbonization. Starting in early 2027, a strict mandatory shore power requirement will apply in the port for all ships technically capable of using it. This puts the Hanseatic city well ahead of the EU, which does not mandate such a regulation until 2030. The maritime energy transition is not limited to cruise ships, either. Increasingly, terminals for gigantic container ships are also being upgraded step by step to utilize green electricity.

In addition to the environment, the local economy also benefits enormously, as maritime tourism is noticeably booming. Following the historic record year of 2025, which saw over 1.41 million processed passengers, Hamburg is already expecting more than 330 ocean cruise ship calls for this season. This strong growth not only brings success to the shipping companies but also ensures booming business for the city's hotels, restaurants, and retail sector.
