As the third vessel in the revolutionary Icon class, Legend of the Seas shares the title of the world's largest and most complex cruise ship class with her sister ships. Boasting a massive gross tonnage of approximately 250,000 GT, the ocean giant features 2,805 staterooms, accommodating up to 7,600 passengers at maximum capacity. A distinctive parabolic bow design ensures excellent hydrodynamic stability in rough seas. The vessel is powered by six advanced Wärtsilä main engines and three 360-degree azimuthing Azipod thrusters, enabling exceptional maneuverability in narrow harbors without tug assistance.
The ship’s historic name marks an absolute first in Royal Caribbean's fleet history, as it is the first time an iconic former name has been reactivated for a strategically vital newbuild. The original Legend of the Seas was launched in 1994, though it was a true lightweight by comparison. Choosing this historic name serves as an emotional homage to the cruise line’s heritage, bridging the early years of modern shipbuilding with today's absolute technological dominance in global tourism.
In terms of environmental technology, the ship sets new standards on the path toward net-zero emissions by 2035. As the fleet's fourth LNG-powered vessel, it virtually eliminates local air pollutants. Furthermore, it features integrated fuel cell technology as an alternative, emission-free energy source that provides electricity to the ship's grid while generating pure freshwater. Combined with advanced waste heat recovery systems and shore power connectivity, its carbon footprint is significantly reduced both at sea and in port.
Before the ship kicks off its season of week-long Western Mediterranean cruises from Civitavecchia (Rome) on July 4, 2026, it will make a technical stop in Cádiz, Spain. There, the open Central Park neighborhood will be landscaped with over 30,500 real plants—a logistical necessity, as the sensitive greenery could not have survived the freezing winter temperatures during the fitting-out phase in Finland. Following its inaugural European season, Legend of the Seas will reposition to Florida in October, sailing Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale including stops at the private island Perfect Day at CocoCay.
