There is a strict economic rationale behind the arrival in Bremerhaven: the 2026 Northern European season is extremely condensed and concludes on August 24. TUI Cruises is deliberately capitalising on the peak summer holiday window in Germany to operate lucrative round-trips to the Norwegian fjords and up to the North Cape. Rather than leaving the ship in the volatile autumn weather of Northern Europe, TUI Cruises will immediately transfer it to the high-yield North American market. On August 24, Mein Schiff 1 will permanently leave Europe from Hamburg, bound for New York (Bayonne) to capture the high demand for "Indian Summer" cruises along the US East Coast, before moving to the Caribbean for the winter.
A glance at the vessel's space ratio confirms that it is perfectly equipped for these demanding ocean crossings and extreme climate transitions. With a ratio of approximately 38.53 gross tonnage (GT) per passenger, Mein Schiff 1 offers an exceptionally generous sense of space and high comfort, which is a major advantage during multi-day Atlantic crossings. This layout is further supported by vast spa and sports facilities spanning over 2,000 square meters and a weather-independent sports arena on Deck 14.
The vital importance of functioning safety and emergency logistics on such long-haul routes was demonstrated recently in May 2026. An acute medical emergency on board during a Western Mediterranean cruise forced an immediate diversion from the scheduled route. Due to its superior medical infrastructure and seamless administrative clearance, the ship's command decided on an unscheduled emergency stop at the deep-water port of Málaga, where the patient was safely transferred to the shoreside emergency services.
This logistical balancing act forms part of a broader fleet restructuring at TUI Cruises for the summer of 2026. Following the launch of the new InTUIition class – including Mein Schiff Relax and the latest newbuild Mein Schiff Flow, which will be christened on June 20 in Trieste by godmothers Julia, Annabelle, and Karin – the cruise line is positioning five of its eight vessels in the high-revenue Central European market departing from Germany. Within this global network, Mein Schiff 1 plays the role of a flexible revenue maximiser, effortlessly handling both the rough arctic waters of Norway and demanding transatlantic long-haul routes.
