In mid-May, the time had come again: After a 25-day voyage from South America, the Costa Diadema moored in the Port of Kiel. With this arrival, Costa Cruises officially launched its 2026 Northern Europe season. By now, the ship's operations have fully settled into their Nordic rhythm. The ocean liner is currently already on its second tour, visiting highlights such as the Norwegian port of Ålesund. The fact that cruise lines are increasingly focusing on Northern Europe is partly due to the current global situation. Because of the unrest in the Red Sea, many trips to the Orient have been canceled, which is why ships are now concentrating on safe, high-demand sailing areas like the Baltic Sea and the Norwegian fjords.

Handling such mega-ships requires a massive amount of coordination at the port. When the Costa Diadema arrived at the Ostuferhafen in Kiel, the largest ship of the season, the MSC Euribia, even had to temporarily move to a different berth. Maneuvers like this show that even modern, well-equipped ports are reaching their limits on peak travel days. However, thanks to practical services such as direct luggage transport and exclusive shuttle buses from the main train station, the arrival process went smoothly for the Costa Diadema's passengers.

Environmental protection is an extremely important topic for the future of cruising, and the Costa Diadema is setting a great example here. Starting this year, the ship has been using the new shore power connection at the Ostuferhafen during every stop in Kiel. This means that the engines are switched off while the ship is docked, and no harmful exhaust gases are released into the air. This is also urgently needed, as the famous Norwegian fjords, such as the Geirangerfjord, will strictly enforce zero-emission sailing regulations beginning in 2026.

On board, vacationers can look forward to a completely revamped experience. With the new "Sea Destinations," not only the shore excursions but also the time spent on the water becomes a highlight. If you stand on deck as the ship glides through the Geirangerfjord past the famous waterfalls, you will be treated to fascinating Nordic myths. And when the sun barely sets at night, guests can relax during a "Friluftsliv meditation" featuring tea and calming music. This makes the journey even more immersive and clearly sets it apart from standard trips.

While the Costa Diadema offers classic 7-night trips towards Denmark and Norway from Kiel, Costa has positioned a second ship, the Costa Favolosa, in Hamburg. The longer tours heading towards Iceland or Greenland depart from there. But if you prefer a shorter, action-packed getaway, the Costa Diadema is exactly the right choice. In mid-September, however, it will be time to say goodbye again: before the northern autumn storms really pick up, the ship will make its way back to the Mediterranean.
