The reasons for the end of the charter are varied. During the winter, the ship is used as the American student campus "World Odyssey," and in the summer, it operates as a classic cruise ship. This dual use has caused severe physical wear and tear in the past. Furthermore, the technology from 1998 no longer meets today's environmental standards. For example, it lacks a shore power connection. Since strict zero-emission zones will also apply in Norway from 2026, expensive conversions to the exhaust systems would be necessary. For the tour operator Phoenix Reisen, such a multi-million investment in a chartered ship is simply not economically viable.
The remaining eight voyages until September will once again take full advantage of the relatively small ship's nautical strengths. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the MS Deutschland can navigate ports and waters that are unreachable for modern mega-liners. The itinerary includes the British Isles, the Azores, Iceland, and an extraordinary journey on the Garonne River deep into the center of Bordeaux. A special highlight for fans will also be the 100th-anniversary cruise in June for Kiel Week (Kieler Woche).
What will happen to the MS Deutschland after the charter contract expires in the spring of 2027 is currently completely unclear. Due to the outdated environmental technology, future deployment options are severely limited. Industry experts consider expensive retrofits to be unlikely. Thus, the remaining options are a sale to regions with lower environmental regulations or, in the worst-case scenario, even scrapping. One thing is certain: an important chapter in maritime history is coming to a close for lovers of classic premium cruises.
