In April 2026, MSC Cruises announced a massive expansion of its infrastructure in the Bahamas. The centerpiece of this strategy is the new, exclusive private island "Sandy Cay," scheduled to open in 2028. These plans are a direct response to the growing passenger volumes brought by new mega-ships like the MSC World America. Instead of classic, noisy theme parks, the cruise line is specifically focusing on nature conservation, exclusivity, and close cooperation with the Bahamas.

Sandy Cay is designed as an intimate retreat specifically for guests of the luxury brand Explora Journeys and the MSC Yacht Club. The island, which was created from dredged sand from channel work for neighboring Ocean Cay, is deliberately kept small. There are no large piers for cruise ships; instead, tender boats will bring passengers ashore. Fine aragonite sand, relaxing coves, and a power supply entirely covered by solar energy take center stage here.

At the same time, the existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve will undergo a massive expansion by the end of 2027. The pier will be extended so that two ships can dock simultaneously in the future. To still offer guests a relaxing stay, new dining options and clearly separated zones for families and those seeking tranquility are being created. The focus remains heavily on the ecological aspect: the on-site center for researching heat-resistant corals is being further expanded, actively involving guests in nature conservation.

The third pillar of the strategy is a $450 million major project in Freeport on Grand Bahama. In cooperation with the government, a new port terminal is being built here, which will also be accessible to other cruise lines and provide a tremendous boost to the local economy. In addition, MSC is building a private, 20-hectare Beach Club exclusively for its own passengers on the grounds of the former Grand Lucayan Resort.
