Meyer Werft in Transition: Mega-Order Secures the Future of Cruise Giants
Behind the scenes, however, the traditional company is undergoing a massive transformation. After the state took over 80 percent of the shares to save the shipyard, the management level is being completely reorganized. Just recently, CFO Melanie Freytag left the company after only a few months. Industry experts suspect that the intense pressure of the ongoing restructuring and significant political influence led to this decision.
To make shipbuilding more efficient in the future, Meyer Werft is now bringing top managers from the aviation and automotive industries on board. The future CEO, for example, comes from Airbus. The goal is to transfer proven serial production methods from these industries to the construction of cruise ships. At the same time, shipyard veteran Jörg Heidelberg, as the new COO, is driving the urgently needed transition to modern IT systems like SAP.
The clear focus is on the future: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will soon help develop ships faster, more cost-effectively, and even more modernly. There are already exciting concepts, such as the "Serenity"—a ship specifically tailored to the needs of older guests. Additionally, to become less dependent on the cruise market alone, the shipyard is now also building gigantic platforms for offshore wind energy.
