World Premiere on MSC World Europa: First Beer Brewed from Seawater
The technical implementation on board is a masterpiece. First, the seawater is purified under high pressure through reverse osmosis. The result is completely pure water, which, however, lacks the essential minerals needed for the brewing process. For the Italian master brewer Teo Musso, this apparent disadvantage is actually the greatest advantage. By carefully adding specific minerals like calcium or magnesium, he creates the perfect brewing water for any desired type of beer, from a light Pilsner to a bitter Ale.
The brewery is located in the "Masters of the Sea" pub on Deck 8. Whether guests are strolling along the promenades on the starboard or port side, they are naturally drawn to this center of brewing art. A brewery on a moving ship must overcome special challenges. Specialized designs and stabilizers in the tanks compensate for the constant movement of the ship. This prevents the yeast from being stirred up or the brewing processes from stalling.
Furthermore, this concept protects the environment and optimizes logistics. In the past, countless heavy beer kegs had to be loaded and refrigerated. Today, the sea provides the water right on site. Only dry ingredients like malt and hops need to be brought on board. The energy required for the brewing process is partly supplied by modern heat recovery systems from the LNG engines and fuel cells.
Due to its great success, the cruise line plans to expand the concept. Upcoming ships, such as the MSC World America and the MSC World Asia, will also feature their own breweries. The beer varieties will then be tailored to the local tastes of the new sailing regions. The MSC World Europa impressively demonstrates how modern seafaring, culinary enjoyment, and sustainability can be perfectly combined.
