Blackout on Celebrity Infinity: Voyage Termination and Cancellation in Piraeus
For the guests on board, the situation was far from relaxing. In addition to the failure of the air conditioning systems, the collapse of the vacuum toilet system caused significant inconvenience and hygiene issues for several hours. Initial findings suggest that a fire in the main switchboard caused the blackout, triggering the emergency code "Bravo." Fortunately, no one was injured, but the technical defect is so severe that the current repositioning voyage was declared terminated immediately upon arrival.
The impact on the schedule is massive: Celebrity Cruises has been forced to cancel the 11-night "Best of Greece" cruise scheduled to begin today, February 16, 2026, without replacement. However, the cruise line reacted quickly, offering affected guests of the cancelled voyage a full refund plus a future cruise credit equal to 100% of the cruise fare. A major logistical operation involving hotel accommodations and flight re-bookings is also being organized for passengers stranded in Athens.
The technical context is particularly sensitive: The Celebrity Infinity had just returned from drydock in January 2026. Furthermore, the incident bears a strong resemblance to a similar fire and power outage that occurred in Turkey in July 2025. This raises questions about the reliability of the technical systems on the now 25-year-old Millennium-class ship. The vessel is expected to remain in Piraeus for an extended period until classification societies and authorities give the green light for further sailing.
