MSC Lirica Leaves South America: Free Upgrade to Megaships for the 2026/27 Season
For customers, this represents a huge technical leap. Those who had previously booked an ocean view cabin on the Lirica can, in many cases, look forward to an upgrade to a balcony cabin on the new ships, as the new classes feature significantly more balconies on both starboard and port sides. While the MSC Virtuosa scores points with its spectacular indoor promenade and LED sky, the MSC Seaview is radically oriented outwards. Its wide "Waterfront Boardwalk" on Deck 8 allows guests to stroll almost completely around the ship near sea level—a feature that was missing on the Lirica.
Logistically, the switch is a challenge that MSC is solving in a customer-friendly manner: the original booking price remains unchanged, even though the new product would regularly be up to 40% more expensive. An important detail concerns the departure ports: Since the MSC Virtuosa, due to its size and draft, cannot optimally call at ports like Itajaí, the MSC Musica is taking over these specific routes in southern Brazil. Therefore, those booked from Itajaí will likely move to the Musica, while guests from Santos will enjoy the megaships.
In summary, this move marks the end of the "old guard" in South America's core market. The region has transformed from a secondary market for older tonnage into a premium destination. While fans of classic Transatlantic crossings (Grand Voyages) may be disappointed by the schedule changes and have to reschedule, for the majority of vacationers, the swap means: more ship, more experience, and state-of-the-art environmental technology for the old price.
