On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the maritime world will celebrate an exciting premiere: the "Day of Ferries" (Tag der Fähren) will be celebrated centrally in Kiel for the first time. Historically based on "Petritag," which once marked the end of the winter break for shipping, the focus today is on modern ferry traffic. At the centrally located Schwedenkai, the Association of Ferry Shipping and Ferry Tourism (VFF) and numerous partners are presenting the ferry not just as a means of transport, but as a relaxed start to a vacation – completely free of traffic jams and stress.

The highlight for visitors is undoubtedly the "Open Ship" event by Stena Line. Between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, doors will open for rare behind-the-scenes insights. Those interested can view cabins and public areas, experiencing the modern travel atmosphere on board first-hand. While the quay bustles with activity, the departure of the large Color Line ferry around noon provides a true sense of wanderlust as it slowly detaches from the dock and sets course for Oslo.

Families are offered a varied program that combines information and entertainment. Partners such as DFDS, Viking Line, and Finnlines ensure fun with activities like "Beer Pong without Beer," wheels of fortune, and a photo box. Even the youngest visitors will get their money's worth: GNV is on-site with its mascot "Marino," and at the Port of Kiel stand, knowledge about the harbor can be playfully "fished" for. Admission to the event is free, making the day an ideal destination for an excursion.

In addition to the fun factor, information is also a key focus. The ADAC Schleswig-Holstein provides advice on mobility and safety, while the shipping companies demonstrate how sustainable modern ferry shipping is today, thanks to shore power and efficient logistics. This new day of action is intended to take place annually in the future, showing that a vacation on the water begins right in the harbor.
