Nighttime Medevac in the North Sea: MSC Poesia Transfers Patient to Sea Rescuers
To ensure the safe transfer of the patient, the MSC Poesia reduced her speed north of the island of Langeoog and turned into the wind to create a sheltered zone, known as a lee, on the port side. This allowed the rescue cruiser Bernhard Gruben to come alongside the cruise ship. Despite the rough sea, the ill passenger was safely transferred to the sea rescuers via the pilot door and subsequently transported quickly to a hospital on shore. The maneuver demonstrates the routine and professional cooperation between the ship's command and the rescue forces.
Despite the unplanned stop and the associated deviation from the course, the MSC Poesia was able to maintain her schedule. The ship arrived in Hamburg on time and is currently, as of February 11, 2026, docked in the port of Zeebrugge according to plan. Passengers on board therefore do not have to fear any delays for the subsequent stops in Le Havre or Southampton. The nautical officers were able to efficiently compensate for the lost time by adjusting the cruising speed.
For the MSC Poesia, this voyage marks the conclusion of her current Northern Europe season before a significant change. After arriving in Southampton, the ship will be transferred empty to the shipyard in Malta ahead of schedule. Extensive modernizations are planned there, including the retrofitting of the exclusive "MSC Yacht Club" area. These measures serve to prepare for the upcoming Alaska season, where the ship is to be positioned in the premium segment starting in the summer of 2026.
