In the wake of the extensive modernization of AIDAluna in the winter of 2025, around 4,700 items of furniture were given a second chance. Instead of ending up in a landfill, approximately 143 tons of inventory were saved for a good cause as part of the "AIDA Evolution" program. This was made possible by an impressive logistical collaboration between AIDA Cruises, the association "Der Hafen hilft! e.V." (The Port Helps), Daimler Truck, and HHLA. While the ship was in dry dock in Marseille, volunteers ensured the smooth removal of the furniture directly from the vessel.

The majority of this massive donation went directly to social institutions in Northern Germany and the Ahr Valley, which was affected by flooding. Another logistically challenging part of the cargo was transported to Ukraine via the rail network of the HHLA subsidiary, Metrans. There, the robust furniture is urgently needed for the reconstruction of public facilities. This impressively demonstrates how the circular economy can work in the tourism industry: what has served its time on board provides valuable aid on land.

For fans of the fleet, late January 2026 was particularly interesting. To cover the high logistics costs for trucks and transport trains, the association "Der Hafen hilft! e.V." conducted a targeted auction of selected items. On January 28, coveted collector's items, such as the popular cocktail armchairs from the bars or high-quality cabin inventory, went under the hammer.

This campaign proves that modern cruising means more than just a holiday at sea. The cooperation between industry and volunteers created a win-win situation. The cruise line saved on disposal costs and resources, while non-profit organizations received high-quality equipment. Anyone who secured one of the pieces at the auction not only brought a piece of holiday feeling home but also directly supported humanitarian projects across Europe.
