Atlas Adventurer: The New Wind-Hybrid Giant for Luxury Expeditions Arriving in 2028
The Atlas Adventurer marks a genuine turning point for the cruise line. Scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2028, it will not only be the largest ship in the fleet but also the most technologically exciting. We are looking at a gross tonnage (GT) of 26,000 and a length of 210 meters. To put that in perspective: that is more than double the volume of the line's previous "World Class" vessels.
However, the real highlight towers 46 meters into the sky: three carbon fiber masts. The Atlas Adventurer utilizes the so-called SolidSail system. These are rigid sails that operate fully automatically via computer control. The plan is ambitious: the ship is designed to sail under wind power for up to 50 percent of the time. This not only saves fuel but also ensures an almost silent glide through the waves – known as "Silent Sailing."
When the wind takes a break, a modern hybrid system kicks in. Dual-fuel engines from Wärtsilä work hand-in-hand with a massive 9-megawatt battery storage system. This allows the captain to enter ports emission-free or smooth out load peaks on the open sea.
Incidentally, the ship is being built by China Merchants in China, while the sail technology hails from France. A global puzzle for a global ship.
Until now, Atlas Ocean Voyages was known for small, very intimate ships. With the Adventurer, the capacity doubles to 400 guests. But don't worry, it won't feel crowded. Since it is an all-suite ship, the space available per passenger remains extremely generous.
Seven different restaurants ensure culinary delight. The new "Culinary Studio" sounds particularly exciting, offering guests the chance not just to eat, but to learn how to prepare local specialties. Those who prefer to relax will find two pools on deck. A highlight is the "Ocean Pool" at the stern: thanks to special underwater grids, you can swim safely in the seawater here without fearing uninvited visits from marine life.
Anyone standing at the railing and gazing out will quickly appreciate the dimensions of this ship. Whether you are enjoying the sunset on the starboard side (right) or watching the activity on the quay wall on the port side (left) while docking – the Atlas Adventurer offers a stable platform due to its size, even when the sea gets a bit rougher. Thanks to Ice Class 1B, voyages to polar regions are also possible without having to sacrifice comfort.
Instead of heading straight for Antarctica, the cruise line is planning something very special for the launch. The first "Grand Voyage" in 2028/2029 is set to cover 128 days from Kobe, Japan, to Cape Town, South Africa. This route across the Indian Ocean is tailor-made for the hybrid propulsion system to prove the range and efficiency of the sails.
Our Verdict: The Atlas Adventurer is an exciting promise. It combines the romance of old-school sailing with state-of-the-art environmental technology and luxury. We are looking forward to 2028!
