Milestone in the Far East: AIDAdiva Celebrates Premiere in Busan on Grand World Cruise

On the morning of January 12, 2026, ship enthusiasts in Busan, South Korea, were treated to a special sight: Promptly at 08:00 local time, the AIDAdiva docked at the "Busan North Port Cruise Terminal." For the ship from the "kissing lips" fleet, this was not just any port of call, but a genuine premiere. It was a so-called "Maiden Call," the first arrival in this metropolis, embedded in the cruise line's longest world voyage to date.

From the North Pacific to Cultural Bustle Behind the more than 2,000 passengers, primarily from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, lay one of the most nautically demanding stages of the entire 133-day journey. After departing Honolulu (Hawaii) on New Year's Day, the ship had to cross the wintry North Pacific. Anyone who has been at sea knows: wave heights of four to six meters are not uncommon here in winter. However, thanks to the stabilizers and the proven technology of the ship, built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, the schedule was kept precisely.

An exciting detail for nautical fans: During this crossing, the AIDAdiva passed the International Date Line. A calendar day virtually "disappeared"—a phenomenon that always creates logistical peculiarities during onboard planning.

Why AIDAdiva is Perfect for This Route In contrast to the newer giants of the Helios class (such as the AIDAcosma), the AIDAdiva, as the lead ship of the Sphinx class, is more compact. This paid off in Busan. While the very large vessels often have to dock far out at the International Cruise Terminal in Yeongdo, the AIDAdiva was able to navigate to the city-near North Port. For the guests, this meant short distances to the center immediately after stepping off the gangway.

The fact that the ship is fit for the long journey is also due to the rejuvenation cure in the spring of 2025. As part of the "AIDA Evolution" program, areas were modernized to ensure comfort for the long distance.

K-Pop and Tradition: A Warm Welcome Since it was AIDAdiva's first visit, the city of Busan spared no effort. In an official ceremony, the captain and the port authority exchanged plaques—an old maritime tradition. On the pier, things became colorful: guests were welcomed with traditional Korean music and modern K-Pop performances on the starboard side of the terminal (although the exact docking position can vary, the perspective from the ship is always impressive).

Shore excursions took guests to spiritual places like the Beomeosa Temple or the Haedong Yonggungsa seaside temple. The Jagalchi Market, Korea's largest fish market, was also very popular. This highlights the difference compared to short cruises: World cruise guests often look more intensively for cultural and authentic experiences.

Outlook: Course Set for Japan and South Africa Already in the evening, it was time to "cast off" again. The AIDAdiva set course for Japan, with Tokyo as the next major destination. The route of this world cruise holds further specifics in store. Due to the security situation in the Red Sea, the return journey does not lead through the Suez Canal, but around Africa.

For the port of Busan, the visit of the AIDAdiva was a starting signal. The city expects a massive increase in cruise passengers for 2026 and is increasingly establishing itself as an international destination beyond pure logistics routes.
