Storm Elli vs. AIDA: Logistics Chaos and Nautical Risks in Northern Europe

Storm Elli has northern Germany firmly in its grip and is causing exceptional circumstances for AIDA Cruises on Friday, January 9, and Saturday, January 10, 2026. The combination of extreme weather conditions and logistical bottlenecks is hitting the shipping company at a critical time. The AIDAprima in the port of Kiel and the AIDAnova, which is due to call at Hamburg, are particularly affected

AIDA Cruises responded in the early hours of Friday morning with an urgent warning to arriving guests. But the problems go beyond mere weather caprices: it is a complex interplay of strategic winter planning, massive rail cancellations, and nautical limits.

Meteorological situation: When east wind meets cold

The low-pressure system “Elli” is causing weather conditions that are rare in this intensity. Meteorologists are observing the convergence of Arctic cold air and moist air masses.

The wind factor: A strong east to northeast flow has established itself over northern Germany. Wind speeds of 65 km/h on average are expected for Kiel, with gusts of up to 95 km/h (Beaufort 10) possible. As the wind hits the huge side surfaces of the ships perpendicularly, enormous pressure loads are created.

Snow rollers and visibility: Up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow is expected. However, the storm will cause the powdery snow to be constantly whipped up. This will lead to massive snow drifts on land and a “whiteout” at sea, reducing visibility to less than 200 meters in some cases and forcing radar navigation.

Temperatures: With air temperatures around -4°C and a wind chill of up to -11°C, equipment on deck and on land freezes, which significantly slows down the work of stevedores and lashers in the port.

The dilemma: too much water in Kiel, too little in Hamburg

The different effects of the east wind on the two ports pose a particular challenge for the nautical department in Rostock.

Kiel: the danger of storm surges

In Kiel Bay, the persistent east wind is pushing the water masses into the fjord. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency warns of water levels of up to 1.10 meters above sea level. For the AIDAprima, this means that it will float unusually high at the quay. This drastically changes the angles of the gangways and loading ramps. Loading provisions via the low-lying side doors could become technically impossible or require special equipment, which would delay passenger turnaround. In addition, the departure maneuver becomes critical: the wind pushes the ship against the pier (Legerwall). In order to depart safely, powerful tugs would have to pull the ship away from the quay wall against the wind pressure.

Hamburg: The problem of low water

In the Elbe estuary and in the port of Hamburg, the east wind has the opposite effect: it pushes the water out of the Elbe into the German Bight. The AIDAnova, which has been in the port of Hamburg since Thursday due to the weather conditions, is threatened by extremely low water levels. If the water levels fall significantly below the mapped level, the “under keel clearance” (water under the keel) will be reduced to a dangerous level. In the worst case, the ship will have to wait in the German Bight until the wind subsides, which would completely disrupt Saturday's schedule.

AIDA Cruises is providing information on how to get there on a website set up specifically for this purpose.
