A dream voyage is currently facing a medical challenge. During the ongoing "XXL World Cruise" of the AIDAdiva, a significant outbreak of Norovirus occurred in early December 2025. We have summarized the facts, the background, and the measures for you in a factual and clear manner.

For many guests on board the AIDAdiva, this is the trip of a lifetime: a 133-day "XXL World Cruise," sailing from Hamburg all the way around the globe. However, shortly after leaving US waters and passing towards Central America, an invisible passenger clouded the holiday joy. By December 8, 2025, health authorities had reported over 100 cases of acute gastrointestinal illness on board.

Following intensive shore excursions on the US East Coast (including New York and Miami), the number of gastrointestinal cases spiked. Laboratory analyses quickly confirmed the suspicion: it is the Norovirus. Unfortunately, this pathogen is an old acquaintance in the shipping industry. It is extremely resilient and highly contagious. A handshake or contact with a door handle can be enough. Current data shows that about 4.7 percent of the roughly 2,000 passengers are affected. On a positive note, the crew is barely affected, with a rate of less than 1 percent—an indication that the spread is primarily occurring person-to-person among guests and not, for example, through centrally prepared food.

To contain the spread from port side to starboard, the shipping company AIDA Cruises reacted immediately and professionally. The "Red Level" hygiene status is currently in effect on board. This means in detail:

  • No Self-Service: In the popular buffet restaurants, such as the Markt Restaurant, guests are no longer allowed to serve themselves food. The crew portions the meals to prevent contact transmission via serving utensils.
  • Intensive Cleaning: Cleaning intervals for handrails, elevator buttons, and public areas have been massively increased. Special disinfectants effective against viruses are being used.
  • Isolation: Ill guests are asked to remain in their cabins until symptoms have completely subsided. They are provided with bland diet meals via Room Service.

Why now?

Statistically, the year 2025 stands out as an intense year for Norovirus at sea. Other cruise lines such as Cunard or Royal Caribbean have already had to deal with similar waves this year. Experts suspect new virus variants on land, which are brought on board by passengers. A cruise ship is a closed system where people live closely together—this unfortunately favors the spread if disciplined countermeasures are not taken.

What happens next?

The ship is currently located off the West Coast of North America, en route to Puntarenas in Costa Rica. The mood on board is understandably tense, as no one wants to miss the highlights of the trip. Cooperation with US authorities (CDC) is transparent and close-knit to ensure that the ship can continue its voyage as planned.

For affected guests, the question of compensation naturally arises. Under German travel law, quarantine in a cabin constitutes a significant deficiency, often entitling the passenger to a reduction in the travel price.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for the crew and guests that the measures take effect quickly and that the focus can soon return to the dream destinations of the world cruise.
