Storm Warning and Tight Schedule: AIDAperla Cancels Ports and Returns to Hamburg Early

The seven-day Norway cruise of the AIDAperla (October 18 to 25, 2025) from Hamburg had to be drastically altered shortly before its conclusion. The shipping company was forced to cancel two planned Norwegian ports without replacement and end the voyage early. Instead of arriving in Hamburg as scheduled on Saturday, October 25, the ship is now expected on Friday, October 24. This route deviation has significant consequences for passengers and highlights the complex logistics of the cruise industry.

Following scheduled calls in Stavanger and Olden on the port side of Norway, the journey was supposed to continue to Ålesund and Haugesund. However, circumstances changed: due to storm warnings and the threat of a possible closure of the Elbe River, the route was modified.

Instead of sailing north, the AIDAperla spontaneously set a course for Bergen, where it made an unscheduled stop. From there, it headed directly back home. The planned destination ports of Ålesund and Haugesund in the second half of the voyage were thus cancelled.

The primary reason for this drastic step lies in a tight schedule. The shipping company absolutely had to ensure that the ship was on time in the Port of Hamburg on October 25. That day marks the start of the 26-day Transatlantic cruise to the Dominican Republic, which is of very high commercial importance. A delay caused by an Elbe closure would have jeopardized the entire subsequent schedule and resulted in extremely high costs. To create a safe time buffer for the logistically demanding Elbe passage, the current Norway cruise was shortened and two ports were cancelled.

Half of the originally agreed-upon Norwegian ports of call have been dropped. Lawyers classify this circumstance as a significant travel defect (Reisemangel in German law). German package travel law stipulates that the trip can be considered defective, even if the cause is not the fault of the organizer (such as bad weather), if the agreed-upon service is not provided.

Experts advise affected passengers to claim a reduction of the travel price for the unfulfilled service—the loss of the two ports and the planned final sea day. They warn against immediately accepting premature compensation offers from the shipping company, such as on-board credit. Passengers should have their claims thoroughly checked, as not only a reduction of the travel price but also, in certain circumstances, compensation for lost holiday enjoyment may be considered.

The shipping company's decision was therefore a business management manoeuvre to minimize the overall damage: securing the lucrative Transatlantic cruise took precedence over fulfilling the contract for the shorter Norway trip. The cancelled ports and the earlier arrival in Hamburg provided the ship with a necessary time advantage and a safety buffer for a smooth entry into the port.
