Scenic Ikon: Ultra-Luxury Expedition Yacht Sets New Standards in the Yachting Sector
The Scenic Ikon is more than just an extension of the successful Scenic Eclipse class. It will significantly surpass its sister ships in size and luxury. For owner Glen Moroney, this step is a clear, offensive response to the growing competition he calls the "yacht invasion." Since Scenic established the expedition yacht concept in 2018, major hotel brands like Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons have entered the maritime sector. With the Scenic Ikon, the cruise line aims to secure and expand its lead in technology and features.
The Scenic Ikon sets new benchmarks in the ultra-luxury expedition segment:
- Length: 205 meters
- Beam: 24 meters
- Gross Tonnage (GT): 26,500
For comparison: It is a full 37 meters longer and exceeds the Gross Tonnage of its predecessor, the Scenic Eclipse, by nearly 9,000 GT. It accommodates 270 guests in 135 suites, which is 42 more passengers than on the smaller vessel.
The true luxury, however, lies in the so-called Space Ratio. This metric (GT per guest) is the measure of exclusivity. The Scenic Ikon achieves an impressive value of almost 98.1 GT per guest – an increase of almost 28 percent compared to the Scenic Eclipse. This catapults the Scenic Ikon to the very top of the yachting segment, demonstrating that luxury primarily means space.
Despite its ultra-luxury character, the yacht is uncompromisingly designed for challenging voyages in remote areas. It is being built to the high standards of Polar Code 6 and Ice Class 1A Super. This means its hull is extremely robust to ensure safe navigation in waters with medium-thickness ice. It is thus fully equipped for the annual season in the Antarctic.
To explore the remotest corners of the world, the ship is fitted with an impressive fleet of exploration tools:
- Multiple Zodiacs and bespoke Tenders
- Two Airbus H130-T2 Helicopters
- A specially designed Triton AVA-9 Submarine christened Scenic Neptune III
The “AVA” specification of the submarine, in particular, points to optimized visibility for an unforgettable underwater experience. These costly and state-of-the-art assets are not just a spectacular highlight; they also justify the premium price point.
The Scenic Ikon will not only be cruising in extreme polar regions. The deployment strategy is optimized for maximum capacity utilization:
- Expedition Season (approx. 5 months): Antarctica, Falkland Islands, and the Chilean Fjords
- Yachting Season (approx. 7 months): Mediterranean, Aegean, Egypt, and Cape Verde Islands
This Dual-Market Strategy balances the seasonal constraints of the polar regions and guarantees stable revenues. The inaugural 2028/2029 season will include over 110 ports in 21 countries to introduce the expanded concept to a global audience. The ship must therefore be capable of performing in both icy port turns and the sophisticated starboard yachting environment of the Mediterranean.
The price point of approximately 1,200 Australian dollars per day is described by the cruise line as "excellent value." To maintain this price in the ultra-luxury segment, Scenic relies on an uncompromising all-inclusive strategy.
Particularly attractive: Helicopter flights, which normally require expensive separate booking, are included in the price for guests of the most expensive suites (such as the Owner’s Penthouse Suites). This strategic inclusion maximizes revenue from the most affluent clientele and creates a clear unique selling proposition compared to competitors. The 135 all-veranda suites range from 34 to a generous 250 square meters in size.
The construction of the yacht is under the direct control of the Scenic Group at MKM Yachts in Croatia. This vertical integration secures control over the unique design and the complex expedition systems, making the on-time delivery in April 2028 more likely.
