Cruise fans have a reason to be excited: the third vessel in Royal Caribbean's revolutionary Icon class, the Legend of the Seas, will be completed sooner than expected. The Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland is working so quickly that the new ship is already "ahead of schedule."

The inaugural voyage was originally scheduled for August 2026. However, thanks to the swift construction, the ship will now set sail in July 2026. This head start is a big deal, as large-scale construction projects like this often face delays. Royal Caribbean is using this extra time to offer three additional high-season cruises.

In September 2025, the ship successfully floated out, a key milestone marking the transition from structural work to interior outfitting. The dry dock where the ship was built was filled with water, allowing the vessel to float and be moved to the outfitting quay. The complex work on thousands of cabins, restaurants, and recreational facilities has now begun.

Due to the accelerated completion, the inaugural port has also been changed. Instead of the planned start in Barcelona, the very first 7-night cruise will now depart on July 11, 2026, from Civitavecchia, near Rome. From there, the Legend of the Seas will set a course for ports like Naples, Palma de Mallorca, and Marseille. This allows Royal Caribbean to make the most of the European summer season, as this period commands particularly high ticket prices.

With a gross tonnage of around 250,000, the Legend of the Seas will be a true giant of the sea. It can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers. The ship, like its sister vessels, will be powered by eco-friendly Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology. It is also equipped with modern systems that utilize waste heat and allow for shore power connections in port to reduce its environmental impact.

The rapid construction progress of the Legend of the Seas has further strengthened Royal Caribbean's trust in the Meyer Turku shipyard. So much so that the cruise line and the shipyard have agreed to a long-term collaboration until 2036. This agreement confirmed the order for a fifth Icon-class ship and secured options for two more, ensuring Royal Caribbean's leading position in the industry for years to come.
