On October 3, 2025, the Port of Hamburg faces a major challenge. The day the cruise ship AIDAprima exchanges passengers at the Cruise Center Steinwerder is also the day of the annual Köhlbrand Bridge Run. This sporting event will lead to a full-day closure of the important Köhlbrand Bridge. This means all arriving and departing travelers will have to use detours.

The Köhlbrand Bridge is a main artery that directly connects the port to the A7 and A1 motorways. It's the fastest way to the Cruise Center Steinwerder. However, since it will be closed for the race from morning until late afternoon, all traffic must be rerouted.

These detours are primarily designed for heavy-duty traffic. This can easily lead to traffic jams. Experts estimate that the travel time to the terminal could increase by 60 to 120 minutes. There is even a risk that some passengers might miss their check-in slots.

The official recommendation is to plan your arrival carefully. If you're traveling by car or coach, you should definitely allow for a generous time buffer – at least 90, or even better, 120 minutes.

Official detours will guide traffic from the A1 via the Hamburg-Stillhorn junction, Kornweide, Hohe-Schaar-Straße, and finally the Neuhöfer Damm, which leads to the terminal. The Neuhöfer Damm, in particular, could become a bottleneck as all travelers converge here. Navigation systems might also provide incorrect directions, as they often don't account for such temporary closures optimally.

The cruise companies, especially AIDA Cruises, are responsible for fully informing their guests about this situation. It is also advisable to check the websites of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Cruise Gate Hamburg for the latest traffic information.

For the future, it is even recommended to avoid scheduling major cruise ship turnarounds on days when the Köhlbrand Bridge Run takes place. This is to prevent passengers and port operators from having to deal with such complex situations again.
