Hamburg Traffic Chaos: A1 Closure, Jams, and Travel Waves

If you are planning a trip through Northern Germany this weekend, be prepared for significant challenges. The Hamburg metropolitan area is facing a traffic meltdown, caused by a rare combination of major events, the end of summer holidays in some federal states, and, most importantly, a major construction project: the full closure of the A1 motorway.

The main reason for the traffic jams is the upcoming full closure of the A1. From Friday, September 19, at 10 p.m. until Monday, September 22, at 5 a.m., the motorway will be completely closed in both directions between the Hamburg-Norderelbe interchange and the Hamburg-Billstedt exit. The reason for this is urgently needed work on the Norderelbe bridge. The bridge, which dates back to the 1960s, is severely overloaded with over 130,000 vehicles crossing it every day.

The problem is that the A1 normally serves as an important diversion route for the A7, which also frequently experiences traffic jams and construction sites. Since both major traffic arteries are now severely affected, travelers must bypass the region on a large scale to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

In addition to the A1 closure, there are other reasons for the difficult traffic situation:

  • Major events: This weekend, several large events are taking place in Hamburg. The three Ed Sheeran concerts alone are attracting a total of 180,000 fans. In addition, the Schlagermove is expecting around 400,000 visitors. These events lead to even more traffic and road closures within the city.
  • Travel waves: Eight German states are starting their summer holidays, while in others, the holidays are ending. This means that there are many vacationers heading to the coast and travelers returning from it at the same time. The A1 and A7 are the central north-south connections for these travelers. The simultaneous closures hit these "double waves" of travel traffic directly.
  • A7 construction and traffic jams: The A7 also has its own problems. There are traffic jams and bottlenecks, for example in the area of the Elbe Tunnel.

For everyone traveling in the region, there is only one piece of advice: Bypass the area widely.

  • Car drivers: The official diversion route via the A255, B75, and B5 is already overloaded. It is better to bypass the region on a large scale. An alternative route for travelers from the north would be via the A20, A21, and B205. If you are flexible, you should schedule your journey for the early morning or late night hours.
  • Truck traffic: The A1 is a main route for heavy goods traffic, but the Norderelbe bridge already has permanent restrictions. For trucks over 7.5 tons, there are overtaking bans and other restrictions. Logistics companies should bypass Hamburg on a wide scale to avoid significant delays.
  • Public transport: The Hamburg S-Bahn will increase its services. Nevertheless, travelers should expect disruptions and delays here as well, as there are also many construction sites on the rail network. It is best to check real-time information about connections before starting your journey.

The current situation is not an exception but a preview of what's to come. The A1 and A7 motorways are undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion program. Most of the bridges date from the 1960s and are no longer designed for today's traffic volume. The modernization will take several more years.
