The Disney Adventure is no ordinary ship: it is the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany. Originally planned as a project named Global Dream for the Asian cruise line Dream Cruises, construction was interrupted due to the bankruptcy of the original shipping company. However, the story took a turn when the Walt Disney Company acquired the unfinished ship in November 2022 and renamed it Disney Adventure. The completion was taken over by the renowned Meyer Werft, which specifically founded a subsidiary in Wismar, the ship's original construction site, for this purpose. This reorientation demonstrates how adaptable and resilient the German shipbuilding industry is.
The transfer to Bremerhaven was a strategic move. The water in Wismar is too shallow for the final outfitting work, so the ship had to be moved to a port with a greater draft. The outfitting quay in Kaiserhafen III in Bremerhaven offered the perfect conditions for this. Entering the port was a true masterpiece: the 342-meter-long ship had to be maneuvered through the Kaiserschleuse, which is only 305 meters long and 55 meters wide—an operation that required absolute precision. The Disney Adventure had only a few meters of clearance on the port and starboard sides.
Bremerhaven has developed into an important location for the final outfitting of cruise ships over the past 15 years. The Meyer Werft uses the infrastructure of the Lloyd Werft on site for this purpose. This proven partnership makes it possible to equip the ship with everything it needs, from the interior fittings to the final technology.
In addition to its impressive size, the Disney Adventure is also a technological pioneer. It is the first new build for Disney Cruise Line that can be operated with methanol, a fuel that is considered particularly low in emissions. This underscores Disney's commitment to more sustainable shipping.
Another highlight is the themed worlds on board, which are Disney's trademark. Guests can immerse themselves in seven unique areas inspired by well-known films such as Moana, Toy Story, and Big Hero 6. A special highlight is the "Ironcycle Test Run"—the world's first roller coaster on a Disney ship.
After the final outfitting and further sea trials in the North Sea, the Disney Adventure is expected to depart from Bremerhaven on October 13, 2025. Its maiden voyage is planned for December 15, 2025, from Singapore. With this, Disney Cruise Line is entering a new market in Southeast Asia and positioning the ship as the first in the fleet to operate year-round outside the United States.
This step highlights Disney's global expansion strategy, which is taking place simultaneously with the commissioning of the Disney Destiny for the American market.
