In 2024, Greece welcomed approximately 40 million tourists, with around 8 million of those being cruise passengers. The country has experienced a significant tourism boom for several years, particularly among cruisers who frequently visit multiple Greek ports as part of their Eastern Mediterranean itineraries.

Responding to the ongoing growth in cruise tourism, Greece will implement a new fee for cruise guests starting July 1, 2025. This charge is not fixed; its amount will vary based on the season and the specific port of call. The revenue generated from these fees is intended to enhance local infrastructure and benefit the affected regions. For passengers visiting multiple Greek ports during their cruise, the cumulative sum of these charges could become substantial.

Fee Structure Overview

The fee amount is tiered by season and location. Mykonos and Santorini stand out with higher charges, reaching up to €20 for a call during the high season.

High Season (June 1 – September 30):

  • Mykonos & Santorini: €20.00
  • Other Ports: €5.00

Low Season (Excluding Winter):

  • Mykonos & Santorini: €12.00
  • Other Ports: €3.00

Winter Season:

  • Mykonos & Santorini: €4.00
  • Other Ports: €1.00

It remains uncertain to what extent this new fee structure will impact the appeal of cruises featuring Greek destinations. However, it is widely anticipated that this measure will not significantly diminish Greece's success as a tourist destination and will enable the country to generate substantial additional revenue in the millions.
