In early June 2024, a technical incident occurred in the engine room of the cruise ship MSC Orchestra during the early morning hours. As confirmed by the cruise line MSC Cruises in an official statement, the main electrical panel was affected. This resulted in smoke development within a contained technical area of the vessel.
According to the company, automated safety systems activated immediately and successfully contained the incident to the immediate vicinity. Passenger areas were not affected at any time, and no injuries were reported. Nevertheless, according to passenger reports, there was a power outage on board that lasted for several hours. Some guests noted a faint smell of smoke in the corridors.
At the time of the incident, the MSC Orchestra, built in 2007, was on a seven-night cruise with stops in Spain, Italy, and France. The defect caused a significant delay of over ten hours in its arrival at the Italian port of Genoa.
As a direct consequence, and to allow for a thorough investigation and necessary repairs, the cruise line has canceled the embarkations scheduled for that day in Genoa and the following day in Marseille. The ship will remain in Genoa for a detailed assessment for the time being.
MSC Cruises stated that all affected guests have been contacted. They are being offered the necessary assistance and an appropriate refund. The original itinerary for the MSC Orchestra included calls at the ports of Barcelona, Ibiza, Cagliari, Civitavecchia (Rome), Genoa, and Marseille. It is currently unclear if or when the ship will be able to resume its regular schedule.
