Princess Cruises paid tribute to Captain Bartolomei in a statement: "Captain Bartolomei was a respected leader, whose decades of service at sea were exemplary of professionalism, dedication, and care for guests and crew." The company extended its deepest sympathies to his loved ones. According to guest reports, the incident has cast a somber mood over the Diamond Princess. The nautical officer had been with Princess Cruises since 1995.
Despite the painful loss, the Diamond Princess is able to continue its current voyage as scheduled. In accordance with maritime regulations, the Staff Captain immediately assumes command of the vessel if the Captain is incapacitated. As the direct deputy, the Staff Captain is fully qualified to navigate an ocean-going cruise ship. Consequently, Staff Captain Salvatore Macera took command of the Diamond Princess immediately following the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei.
Princess Cruises has announced plans to reinforce the nautical leadership team on board as quickly as possible. This will be achieved by dispatching a new Captain or an additional Staff Captain to the ship. The Diamond Princess is currently on a nine-day cruise in Asia, with ports of call in Japan and Taiwan, operating roundtrip from Yokohama. The vessel is scheduled to be based in the cruise port of the Tokyo metropolitan area until early November 2025.
The itinerary for the Diamond Princess's current voyage from May 16 to May 25, 2025, is as follows: Yokohama – Sea Day – Sea Day – Keelung (Taiwan) – Keelung (Taiwan) – Ishigaki – Naha (Okinawa) – Sea Day – Sea Day – Yokohama.
