To facilitate the evacuation, the pool deck of the AIDAmar was cleared. The passenger was safely transferred to the helicopter by the rescue team. She was then flown to Tenerife South Airport, where an ambulance was waiting to transport her to a hospital in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife. According to Diario de Avisos, the German woman experienced complications from pneumonia. Her condition stabilized after receiving immediate oxygen therapy.
Medical evacuations at sea are necessary when patients require advanced medical treatment that the onboard hospital cannot provide. The health and safety of the guests are always the top priority. Such evacuations are often carried out by helicopter or through handovers to the coast guard. In some cases, the cruise ship will sail to the nearest port to transfer the patient to local medical services.
The current AIDAmar cruise, titled "Grand Winter Break Caribbean," began on December 8, 2024. The itinerary includes stops in destinations such as Hamburg, the Isle of Portland, Lisbon, Funchal, and various Caribbean locations, including St. Maarten and Dominica, before returning to the Canary Islands and finally Hamburg.
The next AIDAmar cruise is scheduled to depart on January 20, 2025, following a similar "Grand Winter Break Caribbean" route. Planned stops include Barbados, Aruba, Colombia, and additional destinations, concluding back in Hamburg.
