On November 15, 2024, the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Voyager of the Seas interrupted its voyage for an urgent rescue operation. The ship was forced to come to the aid of a family and their dog in distress at sea.

The family was several nautical miles off the African coast and was unable to continue due to an engine failure. The Voyager of the Seas, which was on a sea day on its route from Cartagena in Spain to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, provided rapid assistance.

A lifeboat from the cruise ship was deployed after all attempts to refloat the family's boat failed. The exact number of people rescued varies; there are reports of two adults with two children and a dog, and four adults with two children and a dog.

Passengers on the ship documented the rescue operation with video cameras and published excerpts online. The rescued group remained unharmed and the Voyager of the Seas continued its journey to Gran Canaria, where the family disembarked today. All further formalities are being clarified with the authorities.

Voyager of the Seas is on a 16-day Atlantic crossing from Barcelona to Port Canaveral, USA, moving from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean for the 2024/25 winter season. In summer 2025, the ship will be deployed in the Mediterranean again.
