Dear cruising friends, tonight could be another exciting night in the skies over Germany! Although no guaranteed sightings can be promised, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are slightly better than usual. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts, a class G3 magnetic storm is expected tonight.

When exactly?
According to current forecasts, the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights is on Friday night. The period between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. is considered particularly promising.

Where is best?
The further north you are in Germany, the better your chances. To see the northern lights in the central or southern regions, the so-called Kp index would have to rise to a value of 9. For tonight, however, a value between 6 and 7 is expected.

WetterOnline reports that the northern part of Germany in particular could benefit from clear skies tonight, which will make it easier to see the natural spectacle.

What's the best way to see the Northern Lights?
Find a place with as little artificial light as possible and let your eyes adjust to the darkness for a few minutes. Then turn your gaze to the north. Even if you don't see anything with the naked eye, it may be worth taking a photo of the sky with a camera and a long exposure. This way, even fainter northern lights become visible. Ideally, use a tripod for this. If you want to take photos with your smartphone, you should set a particularly long exposure time (e.g. 60 seconds) to get the best out of the smaller sensors.

Good luck in your hunt for the Northern Lights!
