The global cruise fleet is expanding by 15 new ocean-going vessels in 2026, growing from 428 to 443 ships. This brings a 5.9 percent capacity boost with around 35,000 additional lower berths and 1.5 million Gross Tonnage (GT). In the process, the traditional mid-sized ship segment is virtually disappearing: cruise lines are investing either in giant family vessels exceeding 250,000 GT—led by Legend of the Seas, MSC World Asia, Disney Adventure, and Mein Schiff Flow—or in intimate luxury and expedition yachts, a market now entered by hotel brands like Four Seasons and Accor (Orient Express).

Both technologically and in shipbuilding, 2026 marks a major turning point. Alongside established LNG propulsion, liquid hydrogen fuel cells (for true zero emissions) debut aboard Viking Libra, rigid carbon sails (SolidSail) launch on Orient Express Corinthian, and a low-vibration Direct Current (DC) grid powers Four Seasons I. Meanwhile, the longstanding European shipyard monopoly held by Fincantieri, Meyer, and Chantiers de l'Atlantique is increasingly challenged as yards in China (Adora Flora City), Vietnam (Emerald Kaia, Star Explorer), and Chile (Magellan Discoverer) successfully deliver major newbuilds.
