Ambassador Cruise Line Acquires Oceania Sirena: Launching as "Ambella" in 2028
For holidaymakers from Germany, the Ambella introduces an exciting new concept. Accommodating around 670 guests, the ship operates as an adults-only product aimed primarily at travelers over 50. The voyages will depart conveniently from Bremerhaven and Kiel, eliminating the need for flights. The onboard language will be entirely German. Those who board from 2028 can fully enjoy the classic maritime atmosphere – whether they prefer watching the coast on the starboard side or the open ocean on the port side. With manageable walking distances, the cruise line is filling a gap often left by today's massive mega-ships.
During the winter, Ambassador relies on a clever solution to bypass low booking numbers in the European market. In the colder months, the Ambella will not be used for regular vacation cruises. Instead, for the next ten years, it will serve as a floating campus for the global student program "Semester at Sea". This solid agreement guarantees stable revenue for the cruise line and allows for competitive ticket prices for passengers during the summer.
However, these developments bring gloomy prospects for a true classic: the famous MS Deutschland is losing its most important contracts due to the Ambella. The summer charter for Phoenix Reisen already ended in 2026, and from 2028, the Ambella will also take over the winter operations for "Semester at Sea". Since expensive modernizations for the aging MS Deutschland are unprofitable, the former television star ship is likely facing its final retirement soon.
