Billion-Dollar Deal: Royal Caribbean Acquires 50% Stake in Sandals Resorts
The joint venture will be co-chaired by Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty and Sandals Resorts Executive Chairman Adam Stewart, with Stewart retaining operational leadership over the hotel properties. For guests, current reservations, loyalty benefits, and service standards will continue unchanged. Going forward, the two companies plan to integrate their distribution and booking systems, enabling seamless "cruise-and-stay" packages that link ocean voyages across Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea directly with land-based resort getaways.
Strategically, the transaction marks Royal Caribbean's largest expansion to date as it transforms from a pure-play cruise operator into a diversified global vacation company. Adding 20 prime resorts across eight Caribbean islands—including Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Barbados—allows the group to overcome port and shipyard capacity limits, hedge against maritime fuel price volatility, and smooth out seasonal demand. For Sandals, the alliance injects substantial liquidity and expands global market reach while keeping the Stewart family deeply invested in the brand's long-term future.
Integrating the two operations presents distinct hurdles. Most cruise itineraries depart from ports in Florida or Texas, requiring complex airlift and flight connections to reach Caribbean resort islands. Furthermore, Sandals’ legacy all-inclusive pricing model contrasts with traditional cruise economics that rely significantly on onboard ancillary spending. Managing local Caribbean stakeholder relationships and community commitments will also remain paramount, reinforcing the importance of keeping Adam Stewart at the forefront of the operational venture.
