AIDAbella: Scottish Ports Canceled – Direct Course to Iceland

The weather in the North Atlantic is severely disrupting the AIDAbella's itinerary. The ship is currently on its 14-day "Scotland & Iceland with Solar Eclipse" voyage. After the stop in Lerwick on the Shetland Islands had to be canceled on August 5th due to strong winds, Stornoway met the same fate on August 7th. Instead of calling at the Scottish ports, the ship has now set a direct course for Iceland.

Safety always takes priority at sea. As a Sphinx-class vessel, the AIDAbella offers a large surface area for the wind. Even though Stornoway recently opened a new deep-water terminal, the weather conditions made safe docking or tendering impossible. Strict maritime safety regulations (SOLAS) leave the captain with no choice but to adjust the route to protect passengers and crew.

There is also a clear strategy behind these cancellations. The absolute highlight of this journey is the total solar eclipse on August 12th in Reykjavik. The cruise line simply cannot risk falling behind schedule due to an Atlantic low-pressure system. Skipping the Scottish ports acts as a crucial nautical buffer to guarantee a punctual arrival in Iceland for this major astronomical event under any circumstances.

For the guests on board, the missed ports mean not only a change of plans but also, according to German travel law, the right to a partial refund of the cruise price and reimbursement for canceled shore excursions. However, the situation is a heavy blow for the local economies. The communities in Lerwick and Stornoway are losing vital tourism revenue due to the unexpected absence of over 2,000 cruise guests.
