Cruise Scandal: Turkey Issues Docking Ban for the "Scarlet Lady"

The "Scarlet Lady," operated by Virgin Voyages, was originally scheduled to moor on the Turkish coast. But that plan fell through. Turkish authorities abruptly denied the ship, which was fully chartered for a queer cruise by Atlantis Events, permission to dock in Kuşadası and Istanbul. The official reasoning stated that the guests on board did not align with the country's moral and family values. So, while the Turkish coast was supposed to appear on the starboard side, passengers are now looking at completely new destinations following a spontaneous rerouting.

To avoid high EU taxes on board, a replacement port outside the European Union had to be found quickly. Therefore, the ultra-modern ship spontaneously headed for Alexandria in Egypt before continuing to Greece. However, this rejection did not come out of the blue. There had already been media campaigns against the trip in Istanbul beforehand, which even led to the closure of a well-known queer club. It is worth noting that similar cruise visits were handled in a completely relaxed and welcoming manner in Turkey just a few years ago.

For the local economy, this port ban is a severe loss. In Kuşadası alone, the port operator and local merchants are missing out on millions in revenue. The affluent vacationers, who on this trip include the famous Broadway star Patti LuPone, are now spending their money on excursions, restaurants, and souvenirs in other ports. This is causing great concern within the international tourism industry.

Such unilateral political actions make long-term route planning highly unpredictable for major cruise lines. Trust in Turkey as a safe and reliable travel destination has sustained massive cracks. It is highly likely that cruise companies will include the country less frequently in their itineraries in the future to avoid exposing their guests and ships to state arbitrariness. Ultimately, the direct tourist competition in the western Mediterranean will be the main beneficiary.
