As of June 2026, the Swiss cruise line MSC Cruises and Germany's Meyer Werft are in the final stages of finalizing a historic multi-billion-euro order for an initial four next-generation cruise ships. With the introduction of the "New Frontier" class, MSC is strategically expanding its shipyard network to a trio of partners, driven by long-term capacity shortages at its traditional southern European yards. For Meyer Werft, this massive order serves as an economic lifeline for the upcoming decade, securing over 20,000 jobs across the entire maritime supply chain.

Measuring approximately 180,000 GT, the new vessels deliberately break away from the industry trend of pure volume growth for the mass market. By limiting maximum capacity to 5,400 passengers, the space-to-guest ratio is significantly improved. This design choice eases passenger flow and allows for an expanded, ultra-luxurious MSC Yacht Club premium segment. Technologically, the class serves as a trailblazer for MSC’s 2050 net-zero emissions goal, utilizing next-generation LNG propulsion (fully compatible with bio-LNG), emission-free fuel cells for port operations, and AI-driven energy management systems.

With a potential total value of up to ten billion euros, this mega-project validates the 2024 state-backed rescue strategy, which saw the German federal government and the state of Lower Saxony step in as majority shareholders with equity injections and credit guarantees. Just as this new era begins, former Airbus executive André Walter will take over as CEO on July 1, 2026. His primary objective will be to implement highly standardized aviation industry workflows to drastically cut production costs in Papenburg, ensuring the new fleet is built profitably while paving the way for eventual re-privatization.
