Following the emergency call at 6:50 PM, the international safety network responded seamlessly. The Cagliari Coast Guard coordinated the operation and consulted the global telemedicine center, CIRM. After assessing the patient's clinical parameters, the medical team officially authorized an airborne medical evacuation (medevac) at 7:33 PM. Consequently, the SAR rescue helicopter AW139, callsign "Nemo 11", scrambled from its base in Decimomannu.
The rescue operation took place approximately 8 nautical miles southeast of Capo Carbonara. Due to the structural layout of the AIDAcosma, a direct landing on the ship was impossible. While the bridge crew stabilized the vessel and cleared the outer decks to mitigate the impact of heavy rotor downwash, the patient was hoisted into the hovering helicopter using a rescue winch and a specialized basket stretcher. The challenging maneuver was successfully completed at 8:38 PM.
Favored by ideal weather conditions, including clear skies and calm seas, the flight proceeded safely. By 8:54 PM, the helicopter landed at the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, where the patient was transferred to the medical emergency team. The AIDAcosma resumed its journey and arrived on schedule at its next destination, Civitavecchia, the following morning. This incident demonstrates how effectively the maritime rescue chain in the Mediterranean operates, even for modern megaliners carrying up to 7,000 people.
