However, its eleventh year also brought completely unexpected challenges. In the spring of 2026, the ship found itself caught up in a geopolitical crisis in the Middle East through no fault of its own. Following a weeks-long blockade in the Persian Gulf, Captain Panagiotis Varotsos demonstrated tremendous seamanship: on April 18, 2026, he safely navigated the vessel with only a skeleton crew through the closed Strait of Hormuz under the most extreme conditions.
To avoid any further risks, TUI Cruises opted against the unsafe route through the Red Sea for the journey back to Europe, choosing instead the long detour around the African continent. In late April, the gradual reactivation of hotel and catering operations began at sea. New crew members came on board in South Africa and Gibraltar to relieve the exhausted staff and restore the accustomed level of service.
Just in time for the European summer season, "Mein Schiff 4" celebrated its triumphant return to the port of Trieste in mid-May 2026. Since then, it has been deployed on the strategically important and picturesque "Intensive Adriatic" route. It was precisely in this relaxed and safe cruising area that the ship spent its eleventh birthday on June 5, 2026, in Zadar, Croatia, before heading to the port of Koper.
Despite the dramatic events of the spring, "Mein Schiff 4" has proven remarkable nautical and economic resilience. The ship remains structurally entirely intact and, having weathered the turbulence, continues to offer vacationers a relaxing, safe, and luxurious getaway at sea.
