From May 8 to 10, 2026, Hamburg was in a state of positive emergency. The Hanseatic city celebrated its 837th Port Anniversary. Around 1.1 million people visited the largest port festival in the world. Under the fitting motto "We celebrate Hamburg's heart," guests experienced a unique blend of tradition, music, and maritime technology.

The absolute highlight of any port anniversary is, of course, the watercraft. A total of 158 ships from all over the world moored on the Elbe. Among them were giant cruise ships like the MSC Preziosa and the Mein Schiff 7. But historical tall ships, such as the impressive four-masted barque PEKING, also drew everyone's attention. The grand arrival parade on Friday kicked off the spectacle on the water. Those watching the events from the shore saw the fleet pass by majestically, while small barges maneuvered swiftly along their starboard and port sides. There were fascinating maritime details to discover everywhere. The legendary tugboat ballet followed on Saturday. The heavy harbor tugs danced elegantly to classical music. The DLRG (German Life Saving Association) also showed a strong presence, forming a large parade with 100 rescue boats. The traditional departure parade on Sunday afternoon provided the festive conclusion on the water.

To offer the many visitors enough space, the organizers relied on a special solution this year. A gigantic, floating stage was anchored in the water directly in front of the Landungsbrücken. The platform, named "Elbe in Concert," measured 290 square meters. With this, Hamburg even secured an official Guinness World Record on Saturday evening for the world's largest temporary floating stage. Well-known artists like Santiano, Max Giesinger, and DJ Topic performed on this stage and ten others along the Elbe. A massive fireworks display, perfectly synchronized with electronic music, crowned Saturday evening.

Another highlight was the close partnership with the British region of Liverpool. Both port cities share a long history. The focus was particularly on the Beatles, who laid the foundation for their global career in Hamburg in the 1960s. The city hall hosted an exciting exhibition featuring previously unknown letters from the band. In addition, the newly renovated west tube of the Old Elbe Tunnel was charmingly renamed "Penny Lane" for the weekend. The British Navy was also present on the water with the modern frigate HMS Sutherland, which was open to interested visitors.

A new ship is now ensuring safety on the water in Hamburg. The modern and hybrid police boat "Bürgermeister Nevermann" was ceremoniously christened on Saturday. It operates extremely quietly and is particularly environmentally friendly. Despite the enormous crowds, the entire festival remained very peaceful. The police and rescue services had their hands full but ultimately drew a very positive conclusion. Interestingly, the rather cool weather helped with this. The so-called "Ice Saints" brought brisk temperatures of around 14 degrees Celsius. This prevented heat-related circulation problems, ensured a clear view of the ships, and kept the overall situation relaxed. The only downside was the difficult journey for many guests. Closures at the Elbe Tunnel and in the S-Bahn network caused traffic problems. Thanks to good organization and numerous alternative routes, visitors still reached their destination safely in the end and enjoyed an unforgettable weekend.
