A festive church service at the Hamburg Michel and the official opening on board the museum ship "Rickmer Rickmers" gave the starting signal. Senator for Economic Affairs Dr. Melanie Leonhard used the maritime backdrop to address important future topics, such as deepening the Elbe for giant cruise and container ships. Alongside her were international guests from the partner regions of Liverpool and Latvia, who used the festival as a stage for cultural and economic exchange.
The absolute highlight for all ship fans was the Grand Arrival Parade in the afternoon. Over 250 ships entered the port. Those standing on the shores could marvel at a fascinating mix of maritime history and modernity to both starboard and port. Alongside the navy's lead ship, the tender "Rhein", historic tall ships like the Norwegian "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" sailed past the Landungsbrücken again after 37 years. At the same time, giant cruise ships like "Mein Schiff 7" represented modern holidays at sea.
Along the river Elbe, the "Colorful Harbor Mile" attracted visitors with diverse delicacies, music on numerous stages, and the "Open Ship" program, where guests could explore many vessels up close. A lovely detail for environmentally conscious port fans: the official merchandise consisted of recycled fishing nets to make a clear statement against ocean pollution.
In the evening, the harbor basin transformed into a gigantic concert arena. Artists like Santiano and Fünf Sterne Deluxe performed on a massive floating stage that is even aiming for a spot in the Guinness Book of Records. The grand finale, replacing the traditional fireworks on this day, was a spectacular show featuring 900 illuminated drones. Under the motto "Tomorrow is Human", they painted Olympic motifs into the night sky, silently promoting a potential Olympic bid for the Hanseatic city.
Even though environmentalists continue to criticize the emissions and waste of such a massive mega-event, the first day proved one thing above all: Hamburg knows how to combine its seafaring tradition with modern technology and a laid-back festival for all age groups. We can look forward to the coming days and further highlights like the famous tugboat ballet!
