Currently, a severe health incident on the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius is making international headlines. During its voyage from Argentina towards the Canary Islands, a Hantavirus outbreak occurred on board. The situation is serious: three people have died so far, and another passenger is in critical condition. Two crew members are now also showing symptoms. The ship is currently anchored off Cape Verde.

The voyage of the MV Hondius began in late March in Ushuaia, Argentina, and led through remote regions such as Antarctica and the South Atlantic. The first cases of illness appeared on the open sea. A Dutch passenger initially showed flu-like symptoms and passed away shortly before reaching the island of St. Helena. His wife and a British fellow passenger also had to be emergency evacuated later. Because the ship was traveling in extremely isolated waters, providing medical assistance proved to be highly challenging logistically.

For experts, the outbreak is a major mystery. Hantaviruses are usually transmitted by rodents and are not considered contagious from human to human. The fact that six people fell ill on a modern cruise ship is extremely unusual. Researchers now suspect two scenarios: Either it is the rare Andes virus from South America, which can actually be transmitted between humans, or there are infected rodents on board that spread the virus through the ventilation system.

The situation is having broad diplomatic and medical repercussions. The authorities in Cape Verde refused to allow the sick crew members to be evacuated ashore due to fears of the virus spreading. The Netherlands, under whose flag the ship sails, is now organizing special repatriation flights. This incident is likely to permanently change international hygiene standards and emergency protocols for expedition cruises in the future.
