Even the recently agreed ceasefire on April 7 brings no salvation for the European series. Since the short route through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal is not navigable due to the security situation, the ship has to take the long way around the African continent. This journey takes over three weeks. Those looking out over the ocean from the starboard or port side will see significantly fewer cruise ships in the Persian Gulf in the future anyway, as other cruise lines like TUI Cruises or Celestyal Cruises also have ships stuck in the region right now.
For the cruise line, the safety of the guests was the top priority. Over 1,500 passengers were already flown home safely from the crisis region in February using specially chartered planes. Guests whose Norway trips have now fallen through have a choice: They can get a full refund of the travel price or take advantage of attractive rebooking offers. Those who opt for a new trip benefit from a price guarantee and receive up to 200 euros in onboard credit.
The crisis in the Middle East is forcing the entire cruise industry to rethink its strategies. Oil prices have rapidly risen to nearly 100 US dollars per barrel, driving up fleet operating costs. As a consequence, many providers are avoiding the cruising area completely next winter. For example, the gigantic MSC World Europa is being promptly relocated from the Middle East to the Caribbean for the 2026/2027 season to offer vacationers reliable and safe routes.
