Record Year 2025: Hamburg's Cruise Boom and the Green Port Future
At the same time, the industry is undergoing a massive transformation. Cruises are no longer just a summer business. More than 30 percent of ship calls now take place during the winter months. This makes the Hanseatic city a true year-round destination. The local economy also benefits enormously from this. About 38 percent of passengers spend at least one night in the city before or after their voyage. As a result, the cruise industry generates millions in revenue for retail and gastronomy. It also secures thousands of jobs in the region.
A major milestone of this successful year was the opening of the new Cruise Center HafenCity. The ultra-modern terminal went into operation in the fall of 2025. It brings the large ships right into the urban center of the city. A clever underground traffic routing system for buses and taxis protects the surrounding area from exhaust fumes and traffic jams. A direct connection to the subway is also available. This ensures a relaxed arrival and departure for guests and relieves the city's infrastructure.
Hamburg is also setting clear standards when it comes to environmental protection. In 2025, 162 ships were already supplied with zero-emission shore power during their layover. This means the ships' diesel engines remain completely switched off in the port. Starting in 2027, the city will go one step further. The use of shore power will then become mandatory for all cruise ships technically capable of doing so. This secures Hamburg's pioneering role on the path to becoming an emission-neutral port city.
The outlook for 2026 promises a continuation of this success story. 331 ship calls and several exciting maiden calls are expected. These include, for example, the new "Mein Schiff Relax" or the "Valiant Lady." The offerings thus remain diverse. The combination of state-of-the-art infrastructure and strict ecological regulations is paying off. It clearly shows that economic growth and environmentally conscious actions can go hand in hand successfully in the maritime sector.
