The situation in the Persian Gulf is extremely tense in March 2026. Due to massive military conflicts between the US, Israel, and Iran, civilian shipping and air traffic have almost completely come to a standstill. The cruise industry is also heavily affected by this: several ships, including the MSC Euribia, are stuck in safe ports like Dubai. Navigating the strategically important Strait of Hormuz is simply too dangerous right now.

In this situation, the cruise lines are prioritizing maximum safety. Sailing out into the open sea is absolutely not an option, which is why the MSC Euribia is remaining in the protected port for the time being. However, everyday life continues as normally as possible for the guests on board. Whether you are enjoying the Dubai skyline on the starboard side or looking out over the calm harbor basin on the port side—all facilities, from the restaurants to the pool areas, remain open. In addition, free satellite Wi-Fi was immediately made available so that all passengers can easily keep in touch with their families back home.

By far the biggest challenge right now is the safe journey home for the roughly 15,000 stranded passengers in the region. Since many airspaces are completely closed, scheduled flights have to take massive and fuel-intensive detours. MSC Cruises is therefore not only negotiating intensively with regional airlines like Emirates and Etihad but is also organizing its own charter flights. A smart strategy here is the use of alternative airports in neutral Oman. The repatriation efforts are also being supported by special flights coordinated by the new federal government in Berlin for stranded citizens.

Financially and strategically, the crisis has far-reaching consequences. The entire remaining winter season in the Orient has been canceled for the MSC fleet and many competitors. Booked guests will receive their money back or can rebook their trip. In the future, the major cruise lines will likely focus much more on crisis-proof destinations like North America and the Caribbean when planning their routes in order to minimize such enormous logistical risks.
