Technically, the clear focus is on decarbonization and efficiency. Both ships are receiving a special, biocide-free silicone coating on the hull, which reduces frictional resistance and thus lowers fuel consumption. A lot is happening under the hood as well: propellers and thrusters are being hydrodynamically optimized, and shore power capabilities are being finalized for low-emission port operations. To ensure guests stay connected on the high seas, the digital infrastructure has been updated with Starlink and kilometers of new fiber optic cabling.
For passengers, the update primarily means more comfort and new experiences in line with the "AIDAselection" concept. All cabins have been completely renovated and technically upgraded. A highlight is the newly created suites at the aft, which feature their own sundecks. Culinarily, the ships are catching up to the newer Helios class: the buffet offering is complemented by the "Yachtclub Restaurant," and concepts like "French Kiss" or the Asian "Tokyo Bar" are being introduced. Nightlife is also getting an upgrade: the classic "Anytime Bar" is making way for the modern "Ocean Club."
The logistics behind this project are immense. Currently, over 2,000 technicians and crew members are working in parallel in Marseille to adhere to the tight seven-week schedule for AIDAbella. Her return to service is scheduled for March 11, 2026, departing from Palma de Mallorca. Once this milestone is reached, eyes will turn to the end of 2026, when AIDAmar, the next Sphinx-class ship, will head into the dock for her evolution.
