AIDAblu Celebrates "Sweet 16": Caribbean Sun Instead of Hamburg Ice
At the time of her commissioning, AIDAblu marked a decisive evolutionary step for the fleet. As the first ship of the modified Sphinx class, built at the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, she was given half a deck more than her predecessors. This architectural trick allowed for one of the largest spa areas on the high seas at the time. Another unique feature was the introduction of the first brewery at sea. What was then an experiment has long since established itself as a standard—surely, a freshly tapped beer was enjoyed on both port and starboard sides on the anniversary day.
Even after 16 years of service, AIDAblu is far from obsolete, though she is facing an exciting rejuvenation. As part of the "AIDA Evolution" program, a comprehensive modernization is planned for the spring of 2027. The ship is to be updated both technically and visually to continue competing with the modern standards of the fleet in the future. Until then, she enjoys her status as a popular "mid-size" ship, highly favored by experienced cruisers looking for that classic AIDA feeling.
Operationally, the anniversary day proceeded as a routine port day on a 14-day Caribbean itinerary. While guests went on shore excursions, the event was honored traditionally on board: a birthday cake and a mention in the captain's morning announcement were essential parts of the day. For the crew, especially long-serving members, February 9, 2026, was an emotional moment that underscored the longevity and success of the ship before it heads to the shipyard next year.
