Rejuvenation Cure in Dubai: Mein Schiff 5 at Drydocks World – What Happens During the Dry Dock Stay
A Short Trip to Dry Land Logistically, this stop was a masterpiece of short distances. Instead of days of empty voyages to distant shipyards, Mein Schiff 5 only had to cover about two nautical miles from the Port Rashid cruise terminal. General Manager Stephan Zimmermann reported a precise maneuver: The ship was navigated into the flooded dock and positioned exactly over the prepared block foundations. Once the water was pumped out, the giant steel colossus settled gently onto the blocks.
An exciting detail for technology fans: Before the dock ran dry, all lifeboats and tenders were lowered into the water. They are currently stored in the harbor basin. There is a pragmatic reason for this: When work is being done on the hull – such as applying a new coat of paint – the boats on the starboard and port sides would simply be in the way or could get dirty. Additionally, this allows technicians to service the davits (suspension devices) and the boat engines in parallel.
What is Being Done? More Than Just Cosmetics TUI Cruises likes to call it "spring cleaning," but the list of works is significantly longer. Besides the mandatory hull cleaning, which reduces water resistance and thus saves fuel, a lot is happening inside that directly benefits the guests.
The cruise line is upgrading the entertainment area in particular. The theater is receiving a state-of-the-art LED wall. This not only saves the effort of hauling heavy sets but also enables visually impressive shows. Fittingly, the sound system in the theater is being retuned so that the sound is perfect in every row. The Arena is also getting an update: A new scoreboard ensures that soccer broadcasts or sports results are razor-sharp even in bright daylight.
Those who enjoy fine dining will be pleased with the innovations in the main restaurant, "Atlantik." Completely new carpets are being laid here. It sounds trivial, but it has a major effect on the acoustics and the fresh look of the room. The suites are also receiving attention: upholstery, curtains, and mattresses are being renewed in many areas to maintain the premium standard.
Preparation for the Long Journey This dry dock stay is also strategically important. Since the route back to Europe in the spring leads "around Africa" due to the geopolitical situation, the ship must be in top technical form. The long sea voyage with few stops demands everything from the technology.
Everything is scheduled to be finished by January 20, 2026. Then, Mein Schiff 5 will restart with the "Magic of the Orient" voyage. The first guests can therefore look forward to a ship that feels technically and visually almost like a new build.
