As the year turns from 2025 to 2026, the maritime world focuses on three strategically important locations. In Funchal (Madeira), the Port of Hamburg, and Honolulu (Hawaii), December 31 reveals completely different scenarios within the cruise industry. While Madeira faces a record-breaking number of calls, Hamburg focuses on exclusivity, and AIDA Cruises makes history in the Pacific.

High Traffic in the Atlantic: Logistics off the Coast of Madeira

The port of Funchal is renowned for its spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks. On the cut-off date of December 31, 2025, the high density of ships presents logistical challenges for port authorities. A total of twelve ocean-going vessels have confirmed their calls. This effectively transforms the bay into a temporary floating city. Passenger numbers are expected to exceed 20,000 guests.

Fleet Deployment in Detail

The list of ships shows a dominance of the German and British markets. TUI Cruises is particularly well-represented.

  • Mein Schiff Relax: The new InTUItion-class vessel secures one of the few berths directly at the pier. With an early arrival at 06:00, guests can go ashore without the need for tender boats.
  • Mein Schiff 3 & Mein Schiff 7: These two units will not reach Funchal until late evening, around 22:00 and 23:00 respectively. They are expected to anchor in the roadstead and watch the fireworks from the sea.
  • AIDAbella: This Sphinx-class ship is also already in port, offering its guests a stable position at the pier.

In addition, British cruise lines shape the scene. The Marella Voyager (formerly Mein Schiff Herz) and the classic Bolette (Fred. Olsen) are present, as are the Spirit of Discovery and the Spirit of Adventure from Saga Cruises. The latter arrives just shortly before midnight.

Nautical Challenges

Coordinating this fleet requires precision. Since quay space in Funchal is limited, most ships must anchor in the roadstead. This implies intensive use of tender boats to transport passengers ashore. Furthermore, safety distances for the fireworks must be maintained. Ships at anchor use modern positioning systems to maintain their exact location without drifting into safety zones. A look to starboard or port this evening reveals to guests either the sea of lights from the island or the vastness of the Atlantic.

The Ambience represents a special case. The ship plans to depart as early as 02:00 on New Year's morning to avoid the congestion on the following day.

Hamburg: Exclusivity on the Elbe

A completely different picture emerges in Northern Germany. In the Port of Hamburg, only a single cruise ship is expected for the turn of the year: the P&O Aurora.

Strategic Niche

The decision by the British cruise line P&O Cruises to send the Aurora to Hamburg caters to a specific niche. It is a "Short Break" voyage connecting Southampton with Hamburg and Zeebrugge. Guests on board consciously seek the winter atmosphere and the festive mood of the Hanseatic city, away from the warm routes in the south.

The ship docks at 07:00 in the morning and stays overnight. Since no other large cruise ships are at the terminals, Aurora's passengers enjoy an exclusive view of the fireworks over the Landungsbrücken and the Elbphilharmonie. Logistically, this single call is routine for the Port of Hamburg, but it offers passengers a high experiential value without visual obstruction by other ships.

Pacific Premiere: AIDAdiva in Honolulu

With a time difference, a milestone for the German cruise industry takes place in the Central Pacific. The AIDAdiva is docked in the port of Honolulu on the island of Oahu on December 31, 2025.

A New Course for the World Cruise

As part of its 133-day world cruise, the ship calls at Hawaii for the first time. This step is part of a strategy to make world cruise itineraries more attractive by including destinations on the US West Coast and in the Pacific. The ship itself was modernized in the spring of 2025 ("AIDA Evolution") to meet the demands of this long voyage.

The operational data is promising:

  • Arrival: 08:00 in the morning following a tour of the neighboring islands.
  • Berth: Pier 11 at the Aloha Tower. This is the most central berth in Honolulu, directly at the heart of the local festivities.
  • Departure: January 01, 2026, at 02:00.

Remarkable is the absence of the local competitor Pride of America (Norwegian Cruise Line), which is scheduled to be off the coast of Big Island. Thus, the stage in Honolulu belongs exclusively to the German ship. With tropical temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius, guests can expect a New Year's Eve in summer attire—a stark contrast to the winter jackets in Hamburg.

Conclusion: Three Ports, Three Strategies

December 31, 2025, illustrates the segmentation of the cruise industry. Madeira relies on volume and the event experience ("cluster tourism"), with modern ships like Mein Schiff Relax serving as technological showcases. Hamburg successfully serves the market for quiet, wintry city breaks with the Aurora. Honolulu symbolizes the expansion of German cruise lines onto global long-haul routes with the call of the AIDAdiva.

For the logistics teams on land and the crews on board, this day remains the most operationally demanding of the year.
